Abstract:

Record of two sessions of postgraduate education in surgery, April 30-June 1, 1923 and Sept. 8-Oct. 4, 1924, given by the department of surgery at the Peking Union Medical College.  Included are typescript notes of surgical operations, grand rounds, and lectures; photographs of patients; and a photograph of the 1923 class.  While all kinds of surgical operations except neurological are represented, there is a preponderance of orthopedic, gastrointestinal, and plastic operations.  It appears these volumes were created by the PUMC dept. of surgery, rather than by one of the students.

The 1923 session had 16 students, while the 1924 session had 15.  Of these 31 students, 8 were Chinese and the rest were Western surgeons working in China.

Historical/Biographical Note:

The Peking Union Medical College was founded in 1906 by British and American missionaries. In 1915, the College came under the auspices of the Rockefeller Foundation through its China Medical Board.  During the 1920s and ‘30s, the PUMC was an outpost of Western medicine and medical education in China and had a largely American faculty.
