Historical/Biographical Note:

Founded in 1868 and opened in 1872 on Madison Avenue and 70th Street, Presbyterian Hospital moved to Washington Heights in 1928 as part of an alliance with the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.  The new campus was generally known as the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center into the late 1980s.

From the late 1970s to the late 1980s, Presbyterian was engaged in a massive effort to modernize its original plant and to construct a new patient care facility on the Medical Center campus. To be allowed to do this, Presbyterian was required by the New York State Dept. of Health to build a new community hospital to make up for the loss of several smaller hospitals that had closed in the neighborhood.  This would be become Allen Pavilion, later Allen Hospital, built on a part of the Columbia University athletic campus in the Inwood section of Manhattan.

Scope and Content:

An incomplete set of records documenting the modernization of the original Presbyterian Hospital buildings (built 1925-1928), and the planning for the construction of Milstein Hospital Building on the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center campus and the Allen Pavilion in the Inwood section of northern Manhattan, 1978-1981.  The actual construction of the new buildings occurred in 1985-1988. Included are minutes, a mission statement, and the Certificate of Need submitted to the New York State Dept. of Health.

Provenance:

Unknown. The records were found unboxed among miscellaneous Columbia University records in Archives and Special Collections in 1997.
