Annual Reports of the President

The annual reports of the President of Columbia University include reports of all the schools of the University. For annual reports of the Dean of the College of Physicians and Surgeons before our digital copies begin in 1931, researchers will find an abbreviated version in the President's reports. Additional reports can also be found for the Deans of schools of dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, and tropical medicine as they are established. Archives & Special Collections lacks reports for 1893 or any after 1946.

University Catalogue

Includes lists of trustees, officers, faculty and students; course offerings; degrees conferred; academic calendar; and much other information on all the schools of Columbia University. Archives & Special Collections has no copies after 1944/45.

College of Dental Medicine/School of Dental & Oral Surgery/School of Dentistry/College of Dental & Oral Surgery of New York (CODOS)

Founded as the School of Dentistry, 1916; merged in 1923 with the College of Dental & Oral Surgery of New York (founded 1892) and renamed School of Dental & Oral Surgery; became College of Dental Medicine, 2006.

Yearbooks

The earliest yearbooks, 1908-1922, are from the College of Dental and Oral Surgery of New York (CODOS). The Library is missing the 1923 CODOS yearbook and possibly other published years. The first Columbia University School of Dental and Oral Surgery yearbook in our collection is 1928. Our holdings are missing 1929-30, 1943-46, and 1949. Because of funding constraints, 1992 was the last year digitized.

Program established in Fall 1917; last graduate 1990. After 1974/75, information for the Dental Hygienists Course can be found in the dental school announcements.

Archives & Special Collections has a very incomplete set of announcements for post-graduate courses.

Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons

Founded in 1767 as the Faculty of Medicine of King's College. Revived in 1791 as the medical school of Columbia College. In 1814 Columbia's medical school was merged into the College of Physicians & Surgeons (P&S), founded in 1807. P&S affiliated with Columbia in 1860 and completely merged with it in 1891. Renamed Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, December, 2017.

Yearbooks

The first P&S yearbook was published in 1947. It is not known if one was published in 1948; however, no yearbooks were published in 1971-75,1977-81. Because of funding constraints, 1992 was the last year digitized.

Announcements

The College of Physicians and Surgeons offered a wide variety of postgraduate and continuing education courses for practicing physicians. This is probably not a complete set.

Annual Reports of the Dean

For annual reports before 1931, an abbreviated version can be found in the annual reports of the President of Columbia University. 1931-1958 reports are for the medical school only. From 1959-1990, the reports are for both the medical school and Presbyterian Hospital.

Inaugural Dissertations

A list of about 70 printed inaugural dissertations of College of Physicians & Surgeons graduates, 1771-1857, can be found on CUMC History page. Links have been provided for those items that have been digitized.

Mailman School of Public Health

Opened in 1922 as the Delamar Institute of Public Health; renamed School of Public Health, July 1, 1945; name changed to School of Public Health and Administrative Medicine, July 1, 1955; renamed School of Public Health, c.1973. Became Mailman School of Public Health in 1998.

Yearbooks

The Mailman School of Public Health does not seem to have published yearbooks except for the years 1956-1967 and even that period has gaps. All the yearbooks currently held by Archives & Special Collections have been digitized.

School of Nursing/Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing

Founded as the Presbyterian Hospital Training School for Nurses, 1892; renamed Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing, c.1904; became Dept. of Nursing of the Columbia University Faculty of Medicine, 1937; School of Nursing, 1974.

Yearbooks

There appear to have been no School of Nursing yearbooks before 1936. It is not known if editions were published for the missing years. None seem to have been published in 1943-44. 1989 was the last class to publish a yearbook.

Annual Reports of the Dean

Annual reports of the Dean of the School of Nursing don't appear to have been separately issued until 1981/82. Before that date, they can be found in the annual reports of the Presbyterian Hospital and, from 1937 on, in the annual reports of the Dean of the College of Physicians and Surgeons (see above). It's not known if annual reports were published for the years missing here.

Student Handbooks

Archives & Special Collections has a very scattered set of student handbooks. Earlier volumes covering many of the years between 1922-1951 are held by Archives & Special Collections but couldn't be digitized because of their condition. They may be consulted in the department.

Quarterly Magazine / Alumni Magazine

The Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing Alumnae Association (currently the Columbia University-Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association, Inc.) began publishing an alumnae magazine called the Quarterly Magazine in 1906. Besides printing the minutes and other official transactions of the Association, the magazine includes a wide range of news about Presbyterian Hospital and the nursing profession. The numerous articles and letters by alumnae serving in positions all across the United States as well as around the world provide a vivid picture of the range of nursing experiences in the first half of the 20th century. One issue a year included a directory of graduates which can be a valuable biographical and genealogical resource.

The 1906-1960 volumes were digitized in 2018 with a generous gift from the Columbia University-Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association, Inc. Unfortunately our bound copy of volume 17, no. 1 - volume 20, no. 4 (Oct. 1922-July 1926) was too fragile to digitize but it can be consulted at Archives & Special Collections. We have digitized all the loose copies we hold for this period and continue to look for additional issues for future digitization. Post-1960 issues are not digitized but can be read at Archives & Special Collections.

College of Pharmaceutical Sciences/College of Pharmacy of the City of New York

Founded in 1829 as the College of Pharmacy of the City of New York; became an affiliate of Columbia University, 1904; changed name to College of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1966; closed in 1976.

It isn’t known if the College of Pharmacy/College of Pharmaceutical Sciences published yearbooks for the years not represented here.

Established in 1926 as a joint venture with the University of Puerto Rico; Columbia's involvement ended in 1948.

Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research

Founded in 1945 as the Psychoanalytic Center for Training and Research. Archives & Special Collections also has paper copies for most of the years not present here.

Institute of Cancer Research

Founded in 1908 with a $50,000 donation from railroad millionaire George W. Crocker, the Institute was originally known as the Crocker Special Research Fund or, more usually, the Crocker Institute. The name was changed to the Institute of Cancer Research sometime before 1930. It is the ancestor of today's Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center. Archives & Special Collections has a very incomplete run of Director's reports; however, a section on the Institute can usually be found in the annual reports of the Dean of the College of Physicians and Surgeons.
