Aristides Agramonte Y Simoni (1914 Hon) Noted physician and leader in the fight on yellow fever, died in New Orleans at age 63. Dr. Agramonte had been a resident of New Orleans only a few weeks, having gone there from Havana, Cuba, to serve as head of the Department of Tropical Diseases of the Louisiana State University Medical School. Together with four other physicians including Jesse William Lazear, P&S1892, were appointed thirty years ago by the United States government to investigate the acute infectious diseases then occurring in tropical countries and which were interfering with the construction of the Panama Canal. Dr. Agramonte was the last of the survivors of this group. By patient experimenting, he and his colleagues discovered the sources of yellow fever and the cure was not long in forthcoming. Before going to New Orleans Dr. Agramonte was professor of bacteriology and experimental pathology at the University of Havana for several years. At the time of his death he was president of the Pan-American Medical Association and had been president of the Columbia Alumni Club of Havana. A few years ago, the United States Congress gave him the Merit of Honor medal and a monthly pension of $125 for his part in the yellow fever campaign.
