Papers of nurse and nursing educator Suzanne Law Hawes.
History and Biography
Suzanne Law Hawes received her undergraduate degree from Seton Hill College (1956) and her nursing degree from the Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia University School of Nursing (now the Columbia University School of Nursing) in 1959. Later graduate degrees include nursing education (M.A., Teachers College), sociology (Ed.D., Rutgers), and psychoanalysis (certificate, Center for Modern Psychoanalytic Studies). She has taught at Columbia, Rutgers, and William Paterson where she served as Dean of the School of Health Professions and Nursing (1978-1986). Hawes later served as Vice President of Comprehensive Medical Interview, a software company involved in electronic medical records. She was long active in the Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia University School of Nursing Alumni Association serving in many positions including President, 2000-2017. She is married to John K. Hawes, an academic who was President of St. Francis College, Brooklyn, and has two children.

Papers of Suzanne Law Hawes (Nursing, Columbia, 1959) including student notes and class handouts, faculty appointment letters from Columbia University (1960-1964), dissertations for later advanced degrees in nursing and in psychoanalysis, a report done for the New Jersey Department of Health on health care professional education, and a report on the nursing program at William Paterson College in Wayne NJ (now William Paterson University). There are also correspondence, minutes and other materials relating to the Columbia University-Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association in which Hawes was involved as president and board member. Includes a script for a video on the life of Anna C. Maxwell (1996) produced by the Alumni Association, and materials relating to the 50th reunion of the School of Nursing’s Class of 1959.
