History and Biography
Historical/Biographical Note:

Founded in 1868 and opened in 1872 on Madison Avenue and 70th Street, Presbyterian Hospital moved to Washington Heights in 1928 as part of an alliance with the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.  The new campus was generally known as the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center into the late 1980s.  On Dec. 31, 1997 Presbyterian merged with New York Hospital to form New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

Organization
Scope and Content:

Scrapbooks created or inherited by the Presbyterian Hospital Dept. of Public Affairs containing newspaper and magazine clippings and printing samples.  There are 50 volumes of press clippings, 1877-1909, 1912-1931, 1934-1940, 1944-1945, 1948-1980; and three volumes of printing samples/publications, 1924-1955, 1956, 1963-1964.  Topics documented include the planning and construction of the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center (1921-1929) and its constituent members; medical breakthroughs; patient stories; news of trustees, staff, and students; fundraising efforts; additional construction; the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing (later the Columbia University School of Nursing); and general medical news.   The printing samples/publications include a wide array of forms, brochures, and internal publications created by the hospital. The bulk of the press clippings are from New York City newspapers and nationally-circulated magazines.  Occasionally there are also flyers, tickets, and programs included.
