Papers mostly relating to Richardson's service, 1862-1865, as a surgeon to the 13th Regiment, New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. Included are official correspondence, muster rolls, reports of sick and wounded, a "Report of Medical and Hospital Property," and his discharge certificate. Non-military items are his Albany Medical College diploma (1856) and his certificate of election to the New Hampshire Medical Society (1857).
History and Biography
Samuel A. Richardson was born Dec. 23, 1830, in Dublin, New Hampshire, to Abijah and Mary Hayes Richardson. He received his medical degree from Albany Medical College in 1856 and began practicing medicine in Marlborough, N.H.
Richardson received a commission on Sept. 16, 1862 as Assistant Surgeon to the 13th Regiment New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry. He was promoted to Surgeon on April 1, 1863 and was mustered out on June 21, 1865. The 13th Regiment fought at Fredericksburg, Cold Harbor and Petersburg and were the first Union troops to enter Richmond after its evacuation by Confederate forces in April, 1865.
After the war, Richardson returned to Marlborough where he practiced medicine until his death on June 19, 1884.
