History and Biography
Presbyterian Hospital was established in 1869 by philanthropist James Lenox, who specified that it be open to all "without regard to race, creed, or color." The hospital opened in 1872 on a site bounded by Madison and Park Avenues, 70th and 71st Streets, and moved to the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in Washington Heights in 1928. In 1997, it merged with New York Hospital to form New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
