Historical/Biographical Note:

The New York Orthopaedic Dispensary was established in 1866 at 1299 Broadway in Manhattan to provide orthopedic care for the poor children of New York City.  The Dispensary moved in 1873 to 126 East 59th Street in Manhattan and was renamed the New York Orthopaedic Dispensary and Hospital the following year. It was later renamed the New York Orthopaedic Hospital. From 1904 to 1943, a country branch for the rehabilitation of children with tuberculosis was operated in Westchester County. The Hospital constructed a new building at 420 East 59th Street, where it resided from 1916 until merging with Presbyterian Hospital in 1945. It moved to the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in December 1950. It also serves as the Department of Orthopedic Surgery for the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Scope and Content:
