Research notes, correspondence, and drafts relating to Nicholas Christy's "Faculty Remembered" column which ran in P&S, the alumni magazine of the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, 1994-2003.
History and Biography
Nicholas P. Christy (1923-2014) received his medical degree in 1951 from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons (now the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons) where he was also a professor of medicine for many years. He served as Director of the Department of Medicine at New York City’s Roosevelt Hospital, 1965-1979, and Chief of Staff at Brooklyn’s Veteran Administration Medical Center, 1979-1988.
An endocrinologist, Christy was editor-in-chief of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism from 1963 to 1967. He was the author of hundreds of scientific papers and editor and co-author of The Human Adrenal Cortex (1971). Besides his research papers, Christy wrote extensively on medicine and the humanities. He received the Harold Swanberg Award of the American Medical Writers Association in 1989. Nicholas Christy died at Westerly, Rhode Island, on April 26, 2014.

Papers relating to his “Faculty Remembered” column written for P&S, the alumni magazine of the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, 1994-2003. Included are correspondence with persons who knew the profile subject, medical school alumni, and P&S editors; biographical material on each subject, including obituaries, memorial statements, newspaper clippings, curricula vitae, and reprints; drafts of the columns; and the final column as published. While the first column appeared in the Spring 1994 issue of P&S (volume 14, number 2), the material dates back much earlier - usually in photocopy form. The profile on Donald Tapley was published in the necrology of the Century Association.
