Historical/Biographical Note:

Biostatistician. Fleiss was professor of biostatistics at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health from 1975 until the early 1990s. He was particularly noted for his work with mental health statistics.  His two books, Statistical Methods for Rates and Proportions (1st edition, 1973) and Design and Analysis of Clinical Experiments (1986) are considered classics in the field.  Fleiss died in 2003 at the age of 65.

Typescript of the revised second edition of Fleiss’s Statistical Methods for Rates and Proportions (1981) extensively annotated and emended by the author.  This was distributed by Fleiss to the students in his biostatistics course at Columbia’s Mailman School of Public Health before the published version was available.
