Abstract:

Papers of John Gorman a Columbia University hematologist who with obstetrician/gynecologist Vincent Freda and research scientist William Pollack, created RhoGam, the vaccine that eliminates Rh disease in pregnant women.

Historical/Biographical Note:

Hematologist.  Born and educated in Australia, Gorman came to the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in 1958. He was named Director of the Blood Bank at Presbyterian Hospital in 1964 and became a Clinical Professor of Pathology at the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons in 1970, a position he held until his resignation in 1982.

Scope and Content:

The papers contain correspondence, research data, reprints of scientific papers, symposium proceedings, newspaper and magazine clippings, and photographs, largely documenting the development of RhoGam, the vaccine that eliminates Rh Disease in pregnant women.
