Historical/Biographical Note:

Psychiatrist and psychoanalyst.  Daniels was born in Fitchburg, Massachusetts on May 17, 1896 and was educated at Dartmouth (B.S. 1918) and Harvard (M.D. 1922). After residencies at Boston Psychopathic, Bellevue and New York Hospitals, he did a year of psychoanalytic training with Franz Alexander in Berlin.

Daniels practiced psychiatry and psychoanalysis in New York where he was an active member of the New York Psychoanalytic Society and Institute.  He was on the faculty of the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, 1928-1961. Daniels was one of the founders of Columbia’s Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research, the first university-based psychoanalytic educational center in the world, and served as its Director, 1957-1961. He continued in private practice until 1979 and died Aug. 11, 1987.

Scope and Content:

Papers, 1942-1944, 1961-1975, largely relating to the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research, founded in 1945 as the Psychoanalytic Center for Training and Research.  Included are a draft of a prospectus for a “Graduate School of Psychoanalytic and Psychosomatic Medicine, New York;” minutes  of the Board of Directors and the by-laws of the Research Institute of Psychoanalytic and Psychosomatic Medicine, Inc., 1943; a draft of the Center’s  preliminary announcement, c. 1943; a list of Psychoanalytic Center graduates, 1948-1961; a career reminiscence by Daniels, entitled “An Adventure in Comprehensive Medicine,” 1971; and a 2 page document by Daniels dated 1975 entitled “The Establishment of the Psychoanalytic Clinic for Training and Research at Columbia University.”

There is no accession information for these papers, but internal evidence suggests they came from Daniels.
