In addition, there is another volume of letters she received when she became Dean of the School of Nursing in 1961; diplomas and certificates; and a scrapbook presented to Gill in 1961 by that year's graduating class.
History and Biography
Elizabeth Standish Gill, a nurse and nursing educator, was born Jan. 7, 1903 in Boston. She received a B.S. from Elmira College in 1927 and her R.N. from the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing (now the Columbia University School of Nursing) in 1937. After serving as Head Nurse, Medical Service, Presbyterian Hospital, in 1938-1941, she began teaching in the School of Nursing, which had become part of Columbia University in 1937. Over the next two decades she rose from Instructor to Assistant Professor and in 1961 became head of the School of Nursing (technically "Associate Dean (Nursing) in the Faculty of Medicine"), as well as Director of Nursing at Presbyterian Hospital. She held these positions until her retirement in 1968. She died Jan. 18, 1993.
