Smith was one of the founding editors along with Edward Miller and Samuel Latham Mitchill.
History and Biography
Physician and author. Elihu Hubbard Smith was born in Litchfield, Connecticut, in 1771, the son of a physician. He was graduated from Yale in 1786 and studied medicine with his father and then for a year with Benjamin Rush in Philadelphia. After a few years in practice in Wethersfield, CT, he moved to New York City in 1794. There he became prominent in the city’s medical and literary circles. In 1797 he, along with Drs. Edward Miller and Samuel Latham Mitchell, became a co-founder of The Medical Repository, the first American medical journal. He died while tending to patients during New York’s 1798 yellow fever epidemic.
