History and Biography
Surgery was an important part of the work of the Neurological Institute of New York from its founding in 1909. The NI moved to the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in 1928 and was merged into Presbyterian Hospital in 1943. The Neurological Institute also served as the department of neurology for the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. A separate department of neurological surgery was not established until 1949. J. Lawrence Pool was its first chairman (1949-1972).
Organization
Records of neurological surgery undertaken at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, 1933-1938, 1946-1957. Information is recorded in tabular form and always includes name of patient, operation number, date, type of operation, surgeons’ names, and anesthetic employed. In a smaller number of cases, the result, post-op diagnosis and pathological findings are recorded.
