History and Biography

It became part of the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center at its opening in 1928 and was merged into Presbyterian Hospital in 1943. The Neurological Institute also served as the department of neurology for the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. A separate department of neurological surgery was not established until 1949. J. Lawrence Pool was its first chairman (1949-1972).
