Historical/Biographical Note:

Arthur Purdy Stout was educated at Yale (A.B., 1907) and the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons (M.D., 1912). He was Director of the Surgical Pathology Laboratory, Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, 1928-1951. He also served as professor of pathology and surgery at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Scope and Content:

Medical literature on tumors and cancer collected by Arthur Purdy Stout, director of the surgical pathology laboratory of the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center (1928-1951) and professor of pathology and surgery at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.

The majority of the material is from medical journals, but there are a few monographs included. Most of the articles are in English and from US publications, but there are also items in French, German, Spanish and other languages.

Provenance:

Most volumes have Stout's ownership stamp on the front free flyleaf. Since the stamp lists Stout's work address, these were likely used as a reference tool in the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center's Surgical Pathology Laboratory. Specific accession information on the collection does not exist, but it probably came with Stout's personal papers, which were acquired in 1985-1988.
