Historical/Biographical Note:

Established in 1910 for the treatment of infectious diseases at the bequest of banker Andreas Syngros (also: Syggros/Syngrou), the “Andreas Syngros” Hospital went on to serve the public in the treatment of sexually transmitted diseases and other infectious skin diseases in Athens, Greece. Under the direction of the widow of Syngros, Iphigenia Mavrokordatou, the building was designed by Anastasios Metaxas, royal architect of George I of Greece.

Scope and Content:

Contains 32 black and white photographs pasted to album pages; captions in Greek, French, and English. Includes interior and exterior views of the hospital and its environs, the bulk interior views. Images depicted include the microbiology laboratory, director’s office, patient wards, lecture hall, x-ray room, pharmacy, pathological museum, and out-patient clinic. Includes photographs of patients and staff. Rooms depicted are distinguished by serving either men or women.
