Babies Hospital book

The first history of Babies Hospital of New York, now known as Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of New York, has recently been published.  Written by Dr. Michael Weiner, professor of pediatrics at Columbia, and Stephen E. Novak, Head, Archives & Special Collections, at the University's Augustus C. Long Health Sciences Library, the work tells the story of one of the country's oldest and most important children's hospital.

Founded in 1887 by five women dedicated to providing ""medical and surgical aid and nursing for sick babies" the hospital began modestly in a converted brownstone at the corner of Lexington Avenue and East 55th St. A larger building followed in 1902 and in 1929 the hospital joined the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in Washington Heights.  Since its founding the hospital has been the home of a host of medical luminaries including Sarah McNutt, L. Emmett Holt, Rustin McIntosh, Dorothy Andersen, Hattie Alexander, Abraham Jacobi and many others.

The book's more than 170 images illustrate the buildings, personalities, patients, and significant events of the hospital's 135 years of existence.

Copies can be purchased directly from the publisher, Arcadia Publishing.
