Abstract:

Minutes, reports, and some correspondence documenting education and curriculum development at the Columbia University Psychoanalytic Center for Training and Research during Cooper's tenure as Director of Education (1971-1974). Included are minutes of the curriculum committee and of study groups on training analysis; a proposal for a program in child analysis; and such educational materials as course descriptions, reading lists, and lists of electives. Though Cooper moved to Cornell in 1974, he remained a lecturer in psychiatry at Columbia into the 1980s.

Historical/Biographical Note:

Psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. Cooper was born March 9, 1923. He received his A.B. from Columbia University in 1943 and his medical degree from the University of Utah in 1947. In 1956, he was awarded the Certificate in Psychoanalytic Medicine from Columbia University’s Psychoanalytic Clinic for Training and Research (now the Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research).

Cooper joined the medical staff of the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in 1957. By 1972 he was Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the College of Physicians and Surgeons and Attending Psychiatrist at Presbyterian Hospital. He also served on the faculty of the Psychoanalytic Clinic as a Training and Supervising Analyst and as Director of Education.

In 1974, he moved to the Cornell University Medical College where he became Professor of Psychiatry and Associate Chairman for Education and Director of Training. He retired in 1993 and as of the writing of this finding aid remained an Emeritus Professor.
