History and Biography
Wendy Chavkin is a physician specializing in obstetrics/gynecology and public health. She was educated at the University of Michigan (B.A., public health, 1973), the State University of New York (M.D., 1978) and Columbia University (M.A., epidemiology, 1981). Chavkin did residencies at Albert Einstein (Ob/Gyn) and the New York City Department of Health (Preventive Medicine) and was a Public Service Science Fellow at the National Science Foundation.
Chavkin served as Director, Bureau of Maternity Services and Family Planning, at the New York City Department of Health, 1984-1989. From 1985, she was on the faculty of Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons and Mailman School of Public Health in the Departments of Obstetrics/Gynecology and Population and Family Health. She is currently a professor emerita. She has written numerous scientific papers and has been principal investigator on many research projects involving women’s health.
