Personal papers of U.S. orthopedic surgeon Joseph Elias Milgram, as well as some of his wife, Altabelle Willard Milgram, M.D., and other members of his family.
History and Biography
Joseph E. Milgram (1900-1989) was a noted U.S. orthopedic surgeon. He received his undergraduate (1921) and medical (1924) degrees from Columbia University. He was a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II and served for many years as head of orthopedic surgery at New York City’s Hospital for Joint Diseases.

Milgram and other members of his family, especially his wife, Altabelle Willard Milgram, M.D. Comprised of correspondence, biographical materials, educational and military records, newspaper and magazine clippings, reprints of scientific articles, photographs, wallpaper samples, blueprints, drawings, certificates, books, a medal, and a medical instrument, "Perthes Brace"--redesigned by Milgram.
Also includes three notebooks containing lecture notes for courses at the College of Physicians and Surgeons (1920-1924).
