Abstract:
Three autograph letters signed and portions of two others, 1863-1865, to a relative named Andrew, mostly likely her cousin Andrew Hawes of Stroudwater, Maine. She writes about her life as a nurse at the U.S. Army General Hospital in Annapolis, Maryland.
Some of Quinby’s Civil War letters to her brother, Thomas Quinby, were published in the magazine New England Family History, c. 1910-1911, p. 641-644, 677-687, 750-757.

Historical/Biographical Note:
Almira Fitch Quinby was born June 24, 1828, the youngest child of Moses and Anne Titcomb Quinby, probably at Stroudwater, Maine. She served as a nurse during the Civil War most likely beginning in 1862. She died at Stroudwater, Oct. 10, 1909.
