History and Biography
The Presbyterian Hospital Medical Board had oversight over all medical and surgical care given at the hospital. It was established July 1872 in advance of the opening of the hospital buildings that October. It ceased to exist with the merger of Presbyterian Hospital with New York Hospital on Dec. 31, 1997 to form a new corporation, New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

The Planning Committee dealt with the future development of the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center usually in terms of physical expansion but sometimes programmatically as well. The Staff Committee’s function was “to submit recommendations to the Medical Board toward improving the professional care of patients and enhancing the usefulness of the Hospital.” The Diagnostic Laboratories Committee had oversight of all medical testing including the introduction of new diagnostic tests, the purchase of new equipment, and the implementation of new policies.
