Minutes of the Committee on Entrance Examinations include the names and addresses of each year’s candidates; their grades in each part of the examination; and the result – either passed, failed, or admission “with conditions” – the last usually requiring the candidate to retake one part of the examination. Sample examination questions for each part of the examination (English, Latin, arithmetic, algebra, and geometry) are pasted into the volume, as are a few letters usually from candidates asking for a postponement or rescheduling of their examination.
History and Biography
In 1887, the faculty of the College of Physicians and Surgeons (P&S) instituted for the first time entrance examinations for candidates for admission. According to John C. Dalton in his 1888 history of the College, the examinations were to demonstrate the candidates’ “fair proficiency in the English and Latin languages, arithmetic, algebra and geometry” (page 193). The examinations were first administered to those wanting to enter P&S in fall 1888. There is no record of entrance examinations being given after those for candidates for the fall 1891 semester probably because the establishment in 1890 of the New York State Board of Regents’ Medical Student Qualifying Certificate made the P&S examination redundant.
